Photos contain a lot of fine detail: individual leaves, strands of hair, fabric texture, distant buildings, and smooth colour gradients. When a slideshow is turned into a live video stream, some of that detail can be softened or replaced by visible compression blocks—especially when the network is busy.
PictaCast gives you two ways to play your slideshow: Stream from Device for broader compatibility, and Direct on TV for sharper photos on compatible TVs. You can also choose Automatic to let PictaCast select between them.
Two ways to reach your TV
Stream from Device
Your phone or computer prepares the slideshow and streams it to the TV. It offers the broadest compatibility and keeps demanding visual effects on the more powerful device, but picture quality can be affected by video compression and network conditions.
Direct on TV
PictaCast sends the photos to the TV, where the slideshow is rendered directly. This avoids turning the whole slideshow into a compressed video stream, preserving clean edges, smooth gradients, and more of the detail in every image.
Let Automatic choose for you
Automatic checks for an available Cast device when you open PictaCast. If one is found, it prefers Direct on TV. Otherwise, it falls back to Stream from Device. It checks again on your next visit, so a TV being unavailable today does not become a permanent preference. You still choose your TV when you start casting.
New accounts start with Automatic. Existing accounts keep their saved mode, or Stream from Device if no mode was saved. If your current setup works well, you can keep using it and try Automatic whenever you like.

Modern TVs generally handle direct playback smoothly. Some older models have slower processors, so demanding modes such as Filmstrip or Scrapbook may feel less fluid when rendered on the TV itself. That is exactly why both choices remain available.
How to switch playback modes
- If a slideshow is connected, disconnect it before changing the mode.
- Open PictaCast and select Advanced Settings.
- Under Render Mode, choose Automatic, Stream from Device, or Direct on TV.
- Expand Compare playback modes if you want more detail about the choices.
- Save your settings, then connect to your TV as usual.
Your manual selection is saved for your account in this browser. It does not change the mode in your other browsers or devices. In a browser without a local selection, new accounts start with Automatic; existing accounts use their saved account mode, or Stream from Device if none was saved.
